Entry #1 - Take a sad song and make it better

From: 8TwilightGirL8 's Youtube channel (a clip from the Across the universe Motion Picture)

Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
Hey Jude, don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better
And anytime you feel the pain
Hey Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it's a fool
Who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Na-na-na, na, na
Na-na-na, na
Hey Jude, don't let me down
You have found her, now go and get her (let it out and let it in)
Remember to let her into your heart (hey Jude)
Then you can start to make it better
So let it out and let it in
Hey Jude, begin
You're waiting for someone to perform with
And don't you know that it's just you
Hey Jude, you'll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder
Na-na-na, na, na
Na-na-na, na, yeah
Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you'll begin to make it better
Better better better better better, ah!
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (yeah! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude (Jude Jude, Judy Judy Judy Judy, ow wow!)
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (my, my, my)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude (Jude, Jude, Jude, Jude, Jude)
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude (yeah, you know you can make it, Jude, Jude, you're not gonna break it)
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (don't make it bad, Jude, take a sad song and make it better)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude (oh Jude, Jude, hey Jude, wa!)
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (oh Jude)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude (hey, hey, hey, hey)
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (hey, hey)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude (now, Jude, Jude, Jude, Jude, Jude)
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (Jude, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude (na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na)
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (yeah, make it, Jude)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude (yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!)
Na, na, na, na-na-na na (yeah, yeah yeah, yeah! Yeah! Yeah!)
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude
Na, na, na, na-na-na na
Na-na-na na, hey Jude

I feel like The Beatles have been in my life since the begining, at first as a background sound but as I have grown older they gained a more important rol. I remember that on Sundays morning my dad would start making the fire for the asado, and he would put one of his Beatle's cassette and sing. At that time I did not know much English, neither did my dad, but we liked to sing what we thought the lyrics were. Music has always been a good way to connect with my dad, since he is a man of few words.
There are a lot of songs from The Beatles that I truly love, to be honest almost all of them. But a few years ago I found  a deep conection with this song. It has always been one of my favourites songs from them, but it also became one of my favourite songs ever recently.
In 2016 I was lucky enough to get to see the one and only Sir Paul McCartney live. On top of that, I got the privilege to do it with my dad. I actually ask for the tickets as a birthday present from him.
Ten days before the concert, the most tragic event in  my entire life happened, I lost my mother to cancer. So, when the day of the concert arrived I was not excited any more. However, we went to the concert as planned. I did not know what to expect from the show. On one side, this was something I had wanted to experience  for a long time, it was finally happening and I got to share it with my dad. On the other side, it was a very difficult moment for me, I did not felt like having a good time, I did not even think I could. That day I understood the power of music. And as Paul started singing Hey Jude I felt happy. During the whole song I sang and smiled. I felt connected with my mother, and with my dad, who was right beside me. Since then wenever I listen to Hey Jude I can not help but smile. And from the very first seconds of the song my body fills with happiness.
Even though this is an extremely famous song, the options of videos on Youtube were very limited for some unknown reason. I choose this one because I felt a connection with the character from it. When the video starts he looks a bit sad, but as the song goes on, his attitud changes just as it happenned to me.
To finish this entry, I would like to share a video I took at the concert, the quality it is not very good and you will be able to hear me singing (poorly) in the background but I feel it would be a nice closure to the entry. I hope you like it.

Metacognitive Analysis

I find songs to be a very useful tool when teaching, specifically when teaching English because most of our students already listen to music in English by choice. This means they are already familiar with this format and the enjoy it. Using a song will probably make it easier to caught the students attention. I remember my English teacher asking me to look for songs that I like from English artist and using them to practice my pronunciation or try to identify something learned in a class in between the lyrics.

  1. Hi Agostina! While reading your story, I could not but help finding some connections between us: my father also used to play music on Sunday mornings and that was a special moment of connection between us too. It is really amazing how such memories can reload our hearts with happiness!!!
As you said, music is powerful: it can make us travel in time, live happy moments again and, perhaps most importantly, heal.
Thanks for sharing such an intimate moment with us!!! Love you!!!

  2. Hi, Agostina!
I really felt what your wrote in your post!
Music can be a very good friend in a difficult situation, it is extremely powerful and nothing is better than sharing it with our loved ones.
Something similar happens with my dad, we connect each other through music. As your dad, he is a man of few words.
As Mercedes said, thanks for sharing such an intimate memory with us
    Send you a warm hug!

  3. It's nice to see the connection between people (your family!) and art (here a song!).
Please DOUBLE CHECK LANGUAGE before uploading your texts. Serious language mistakes (adjectives>> NO plural forms, prepositions, tense, etc)
